Back in the day, you didn’t have many options for car accessories – oh, maybe a hula girl figure or some racing stripes painted on. These days, there are a million plus one ways to jazz up your car and make it look brand new again. It’s your call – you can add GPS navigation, improve your sound system, or do practically anything else on your car. However, if your car is beginning to look like a clunker, but it’s still too new to trade in, there are a few things you can do to spruce up the old jalopy for just a few dollars and make your car look new again – well almost.
You need to make sure your car is thoroughly cleaned before even considering which accessories you want to buy. It would be best if you do this yourself at home, provided the space is large enough for the task. Still, it is your option to have the car washed outside, as car washes can give your car a nice shiny look at a low cost.
Next, clean the inside of your car thoroughly and completely. A bottle of gentle, multi-surface spray cleaner and a roll of paper towels is all you need. Windows can get dirty real quick, so clean them before anything else. Don’t forget the rear view mirrors.
Once you’re through with the windows, spray all solid vinyl surfaces, including the dashboard. You just might find some residual stains from the last time you brought in a cup of coffee or some other beverage to drink inside your car. Don’t be afraid to use more spray cleaner than what you’re used to. The cleaner should be used generously but carefully so as not to affect the paint job. If you paint job gets rusty due to this, that wouldn’t be the makeover you’d like for your car. If your car has bumper stickers on it, remove them without a second thought. This doesn’t just make your car look sloppy, it makes it look tacky as well.
The floor of your car may have some traces of gravel if you’ve regularly been driving through gravel and sandy surfaces. You will need a portable vacuum cleaner to clean this up. If you plan to take your car to a professional car wash, they usually have high powered vacuums positioned on the outside of the lot. It’s a small cost to pay for extra cleanliness, but these top-of-the-line vacuums are most likely to do the job perfectly.
Now that the car has had a bath, it’s time to dress it up. A small bottle of touch up paint could disguise some cosmetic damage. If you car is older, it probably has its share of dings. Take a good luck at your car’s finish. If you see any peeling paint, use a very fine sand paper to remove any rough spots and then apply the paint as directed. You don’t need to worry about not having enough brushes because these paints usually come complete with all the equipment you need. You can even use an Emory board if you don’t have sandpaper.
Replace your floor mats if necessary, which would mean if your old floor mats are riddled with holes. Not only will they freshen up the car, but it is less likely that the heel of your shoe will get caught in the hole. Even worse, damaged floor mats could make it difficult for you to shift or hit the brakes. A steering wheel cover is another great way to spruce up the inside. Your boring old sedan could look like something out of The Fast and the Furious if you decorate it well. You can choose from several types of interior accessories for your car. But you wouldn’t want to overdo it. Too much of a good thing wouldn’t be good anymore.
