With hundreds of exhaust wrap products available, it is important to determine which product is best for the intended application. In most cases, titanium exhaust wrap stands out as being superior and the best thermal protection product for the job.
Exhaust wrap products are primarily used on automotive engine headers and exhaust manifolds. A properly installed wrap can reduce underhood temperatures by as much as fifty percent. However, exhaust wrap products are also used in a variety of other applications including mining, manufacturing and other industries that utilize pipes or tubing that gets extremely hot. In such applications a thermal wrap can improve worker safety and comfort.
Standard exhaust wrap products usually are designed with a glass fiber. These products do offer adequate control of heat. Installers quite often must wet the wrap to install around bends and curves, which is one drawback of using a glass fiber. Additionally, the finished wrap must be coated with a high temperature silicone spray to repel dirt, oil and other debris. If these kinds of wraps are not properly coated, their anticipated life will be greatly reduced.
Glass fiber exhaust wrap products are commonly rated to withstand 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit of indirect heat. The thermal protection properties are adequate for most applications, but there are even better wraps available that offer even greater control of heat.
The best exhaust wrap product on the market now is titanium exhaust wrap. Unlike wraps that are manufactured with a glass fiber, titanium exhaust wraps are made with pulverized lava rock. Titanium wraps are much easier for the installer to work with. With titanium exhaust wrap products, there is no need to wet the material prior to installing. These wraps will shape to bends and tough curves effortlessly. In addition to an easier installation, titanium exhaust wrap also manages much higher temperatures. Titanium exhaust wrap is approved to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit direct exposure and 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit indirect exposure.
When the application is considered, in most cases the installing technician receives a greater benefit from the thermal protection qualities of titanium exhaust wrap. The greater the underhood heat reduction that is obtained, the greater the engine performance will be achieved.
